House construction skidded to a standstill this month as Miami was pounded with four major hurricanes in a 6-week period (thereby decimating the availability of building materials and eliminating any possibility of shipments from Florida to the Cayman Islands).
And Grand Cayman now has a 9-11 that will go down in the history books as a national day of disaster. Hurricane Ivan, a Category 5 killer-storm, made the first direct hit by a hurricane on Grand Cayman since 1966. More than 90% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed on that island of 40,000 residents. The Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, which were expected to take the brunt of the storm, escaped major damage.
Highlight dates:
- 5 September 2004: Vic arrives on Cayman Brac.
- 6-8 September 2004: Vic single-handedly secures the construction site.
- 9 September 2004: Vic and J.D. catch the last plane leaving Cayman Brac.
- 11 September 2004: Hurricane Ivan dodges the Sister Islands and squarely hits Grand Cayman, devastating the entire island.
