Hello! My name is J.D. Mosley-Matchett. it’s the summer of 2004, and I live in Stake Bay, Cayman Brac.
Over the course of my life I’ve accumulated four university degrees (engineering, law, MBA, Ph.D.) and even been a university professor (tenure-track at the University of Texas at Arlington).
Middle age affects people in various ways. At 50, I’ve headed off to the Caribbean to build a house and re-create my life.
Cayman Brac is a tiny island 12 miles long and a mile wide with a 130-foot high bluff transecting its length. The southern side of the island is the “tourist” side, where the resorts, sandy beaches, and hurricanes make their home.
Since hurricanes normally approach the island from the south, the bluff acts as a windbreak to shield the northern side of the island from the full force of most storms. Accordingly, the northern side of the island is where all the schools, government buildings, electric company, gas stations and most of the 1500 residents make their home.
So, while our two-acre parcel of beach front property does not, in fact, feature much exposed sand, it DOES feature three moored scuba diving sites, numerous patches of rich soil, and a natural spring-fed well.
My deepest thanks for the prayers and good wishes offered by family and friends as I embark on this latest educational journey...
